About this role

We invest part of our profits into Data4Good projects and offer our service in ML and Shiny on reduced rates or pro-bono. We are committed to make investments and support researchers in doing high impact work in Biodiversity and Climate Change. We care about the impact that our work has on the world around us.

We are looking for a Data4Good Lead who will drive those efforts and impact.

Some examples of our #Data4good work includes contributing to animal preservation in Gabon Parks, building Lyme and Tickborne Disease Dashboard with JHU, and improving performance of a COVID dashboard for Doctors Without Borders.

We are a global leader in R and Shiny, which are used by companies of all sizes to build analytical applications. We have a ML team that does SOTA research in Computer Vision.

You will


  • Build growth engine for Data4Good (D4G)
  • Do New Business Development for Biodiversity in ML [short and long term] and Shiny [long term]
  • Be an owner of Data4Good Bench Time Backlog – make sure to source opportunities on which our team can work on when on a bench time
  • Build relationships with sustainability departments of our existing customers
  • Align Sales and Growth efforts to grow Data4Good inbound and outbound
  • Facilitate with Head of People internal and external events related to our D4G
  • Work closely with our ML Lead and company board on strategic direction of D4G


Our goals for next year


  • Commercial project/or from grant for ML team for H2 ‘22 in Biodiversity
  • Short 2-3 POCs for ML team in Biodiversity in H1 `22 that would help us build credibility
  • Promote the results in the social and mass media
  • Increase impact of Mbaza project
  • Create strategy for Shiny in D4G (together with Engineering Manager)
  • Grow the share of purpose-aligned billable projects


Must haves


  • Previous experience in building new business and partnerships by inbound and outbound and track record of delivering on increasing targets.
  • High alignment with Appsilon Data4Good mission and priorities (now Biodiversity)
  • Experience in coordinating cross-team efforts – you will operate between tech-team, growth and sales
  • Experience is building strategy for new Line of Business
  • Willingness to learn about R/Shiny capabilities and ML applications in selected D4G areas
  • Strong networking skills
  • English C1 written and spoken
  • At least 4 hour overlap with 9-17 CET working hours

Nice to haves

  • Previous experience in Machine Learning
  • Eagerness to represent Appsilon on international conferences and events as a speaker

Every few months we start completely new projects and dive into a new industry. ML Building Damage Assessment

In this app, you can explore an AI model that the Appsilon AI team built for the xView2 competition. The model locates buildings and assesses damage sustained after natural disasters.


This app allows for an interactive exploration of disaster risk and development indicators in Madagascar.

When we build scalable and reliable enterprise dashboards, we focus on UX and a modern aesthetic that improves our models' functionality.
